Student Spotlight

Story 1Junior, elementary education major, Nicole Moore, aptly tackled the responsibility of serving as the Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Coordinator this past year. She describes Alternative Breaks (AB) as a RSO that "connects students with meaningful service work locally, nationally, and internationally…[it] strives to develop students into being active citizens, who are individuals that make the community a priority in their life." Nicole got involved in AB through the ASB program in 2010.

Program Highlight

KrejciHoliday Helper continued to be one our most popular service projects this academic year. Students and faculty/staff donated gifts to over 200 children from the Boys and Girls Club, Unity Community Center, Catholic Charities, and Western Avenue Community Center.

Where Are They Now?

Story 3Upon coming to Illinois State, there was only one thing I knew 100%...I wanted to participate in Alternative Breaks. All of my friends who went to ISU had gone on a trip and the experiences they spoke of really influenced my decision. During my two years on-campus before graduating, I travelled to Philadelphia, PA, Waveland, MS and Cusco, Peru. Each one of these trips changed who I was or helped me realize who I actually am.

Welcome Our Newest Staff Member

Story 4In January 2011, Leadership and Service welcomed Kyle Rindfleisch as the new Leadership Specialist. Prior to coming to Illinois State, Kyle was the Coordinator for Student Leadership Programming at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Originally from Peoria, IL, Kyle was excited to find an opportunity to get him back closer to home.

Building The Legacy

Story 5As a past participant of a Leadership and Service program (or perhaps several programs), you know the value and role it played in making you the person you are today. What you likely don't know is Leadership and Service depends on the support of alumni and friends to make our programs and activities possible. Approximately a quarter of our annual budget comes from gifts of alumni and friends.
