The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) was organized in 1902 in recognition of a need to maintain high standards of sorority life and good relations among sororities. Originally Panhellenic's primary interest was in organizing recruitment and compiling rules for pledging and initiation as well as organizing new chapters. Eventually, however, the desire for inter-sorority spirit spurred the National Panhellenic Conference to become a forum for discussing questions of mutual interest and concern.
The Panhellenic Association at Illinois State University is the local organization charged with fulfilling many of these Panhellenic objectives. Each campus that has sororities also has a Panhellenic Association composed of students who are interested in furthering the growth of sorority members, chapters, and the entire Greek community.
