Joining a Greek organization is one of the best decisions a student can make while attending Illinois State. If you're interested in pledging a fraternity or sorority, check out the information below.
There are two types of sorority recruitment prcesses: formal recruitment and informal recruitment.
Formal recruitment is the primary mean of joining a sorority at Illinois State. It is a week-long event held around the Labor Day weekend in which interested women visit each chapter via a shuttle bus to get to know the chapters, learn about their values, and meet theirs members to determine which chapter is the best fit for them. The process utilizes Gamma Chis or recruitment counselors who serve as mentors for those participating.
After the formal recruitment process is over, eligible sororities who are still looking for members may have open recruitment events, ultimately offering membership on their own schedules. Not every sorority participates in the informal process because it may have already reached the maximum number of members allowed. This is important to know and is also why going through the formal process is the best opportunity for women to join a sorority.
There are three chapters this year that will only host Informal Recruitment. They are: CERES, Delta Phi Lambda, and Sigma Lambda Gamma. Other chapters may also host Continuous Open Recruitment. For more information, visit ISU Panhellenic Association. More information will be posted as available.
There are two types of fraternal recruitment processes: formal recruitment and informal recruitment.
Formal recruitment offers prospective members the ability to explore all chapters on campus at Illinois State University. Recruits have the opportunity to become familiar with current fraternity members, meet other prospective members, and become familiar with what a fraternity is all about. The Interfraternity Council highly recommends participation in Formal Recruitment, as it gives prospective members the opportunity to make personal visits to fraternities who have houses and to get a more in-depth look at fraternity membership.
Informal recruitment provides another option for potential fraternity members to discover the fraternities at the Illinois State University. During this process, chapters are allowed to contact potential members on an individual basis and invite them to an event, such as an athletic event or a chapter meal. Throughout this recruitment process chapters will make outreach to individual men and prospective members can make outreach to specific chapters of interest. This system offers the chance for recruits and current chapter members to meet on an informal basis, however, it is important that a recruit knows that he should never feel pressured to join a chapter. To learn more information about joining a fraternity, visit the Interfraternity Council.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council at Illinois State consists of seven of the "Divine 9" historically African-American fraternities and sororities. Each organization conducts its own membership intake process. Learn more about the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
