Working with the Students’ Attorney

The following are general steps involved when working with Students' Attorney. Please keep in mind that as with any major concern, the sooner we are contacted, the more likely we can help.

1. Students seeking support from the Students' Attorney should call or visit the office.
2. Upon contact, a consultation will be scheduled.
3. Students will be asked to write a statement describing the problem, the goal, and outcome desired, and provide all supportive material or documentation relevant to the situation.
4. During the consultation, the student shares the statement and provides any supportive material.
5. The Students' Attorney is advised and a follow-up meeting is scheduled.
6. Upon meeting with the attorney, next steps are outlined as needed.

A note to parents

Your primary role is to guide your student to our service. It is important for parents to understand that their students have a confidential relationship with their lawyers. This means that a lawyer is absolutely prohibited from discussing what transpires between them with anyone. In fact, the lawyers cannot even disclose that a particular student is a client.

This confidentiality can be waived, allowing the lawyer to discuss the matter with third parties, but only after a full discussion with the student client, and obtaining such a waiver in writing.

Parents cannot schedule appointments for their student. The student must fill out the intake sheet online or in the office, and take the initiative of actually scheduling the appointment.

Illinois State University's Students' Attorney services are provided at no charge to students.
