Free Speech and Expression at Illinois State

Statement on Free Speech and Expression

Illinois State University is a diverse community of scholars. Our core values include fostering a campus culture characterized by mutual respect, a civil exchange of ideas, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. Individuals are encouraged to acknowledge the rights of others to express differing opinions, conscientiously listen to opposing views, and, when disagreeing, do so respectfully. We recognize that learning is maximized when our community has access to dialogue and discourse that broadens their perspectives.

Illinois State University is strongly committed to the principle of the constitutional right to free expression and believes that free speech encourages the open exchange of ideas, stimulates debate, promotes creativity, and is essential to a rich learning environment.
