Spring Break Safety Tips

Off-campus student housing can be the target of burglaries during spring break. Students are encouraged to follow these safety tips to avoid loss or damage of property when they are away from their residence.

  • Do not pack your car the night before you leave.
  • Keep valuables like computers, electronic devices, or jewelry out of plain view.
  • When leaving for extended breaks, take all valuable items with you.
  • Unplug the television, computer, toaster oven, and other appliances to protect them from power surges.
  • Lock all doors and windows before leaving.
  • Ask a friend to keep an eye on your residence when you are away.
  • For those living in a  house  off-campus, you can request that the Normal Police Department stop by and check on your residence by calling their non-emergency number at (309) 888-5030.
  • If you receive a drinking ticket in another city or state, the police report could come back to Illinois State University. You are a Redbird and represent Illinois State University wherever you go.
