Free Speech Policies

Several policies at Illinois State address First Amendment rights and freedoms of expression.

Academic Freedom

Policy 3.3.13
Academic freedom is the freedom to discuss all relevant matters in the classroom, to explore all avenues of scholarship, research, and creative expression, and to speak or write without institutional discipline or restraint on matters of public concern as well as on matters related to professional duties, the functioning of the University, and University positions and policies.

Amplification

Policy 6.1.13
Amplification is any noise that unreasonably interferes with the enjoyment of life or with any lawful business or activity.

Anti-Harassment and Non-Discrimination

Policy 1.2
Acts of harassment and discrimination that result in the deterioration of a quality learning, work, or campus community environment are not tolerated.

Classroom Disruptions

Policy 4.1.17
Constructive, appropriate dialogue relevant to class and curriculum is an important part of the learning process, but there may be times when the conduct of an individual or group of students disrupts the learning environment and needs to be addressed.

University Facility and Space Use

Policy 6.1.1
The University has established policies and procedures to reasonably regulate the time, place, and manner for use of University facilities and spaces.
